Testosterone Neuroprotection in Vivo

Christian J Pike, Ph.D.  Director

added in Year 5

This project addresses the role of testosterone and other androgens in protecting

the brain against degenerative insults.

Specific Studies

1.      Gonadectomized (GDX) and sham-GDX male rats will be evaluated for neuron loss following kainate lesion to determine whether testosterone depletion increases vulnerability to neuronal injury.

2.      Testosterone replacement will be administered to gonadectomized male rats to evaluate its ability to reduce neurodegeneration.

3.      The role of estrogen will be assessed in testosterone neuroprotection using the in vivo kainate lesion model.

4.   The role of androgen receptors will be assessed in testosterone

neuroprotection using the in vivo kainate lesion model
